Rust Empires – New Player Guide

Welcome!

Hello and welcome from all of us in the Rust Empires community!.

This server’s community is quite different from Official or vanilla community Rust servers and most other modded Rust Servers.  We urge all players to take the time to read the rules and consider reviewing this guide for some insight into our community. We also invite players to join us on the server’s discord for further information found here.

Rules

All players are expected to review and adhere to the rules posted here.  There are also additional details and clarifications found in our FAQ here.  The rules guide players with how we play Rust in this community.

The rules are enforced by an active admin and moderator team to enable a creative and social playstyle without the persistent threat of being killed on sight or offline raided (in most cases).   These rules also guide players understanding on where and when they can engage in violence and mayhem if they choose to do so.

It is important to know that players who fail to adhere to these rules will be subject to consequences that may lead to removal of the offending player from the community.

Getting Started

Rust Empires still requires survival gameplay despite not being vanilla.  New players are not provided “starter kits” and much like other servers, players must care for themselves to survive.  This includes gathering/hunting food, materials in-game and building shelter/clothing to protect their body and property.

Players shouldn’t expect anyone to care for them, as they will likely be disappointed.  Be self-sufficient!

Getting the lay of the land

Shortly after logging in players are encouraged to type /map in their chat window a map similar to this one will appear.

Areas marked in red with a skull on them labeled “No Man’s Land” or are marked KOS/PVP are places where new, inexperienced players may want to avoid as a fresh spawn as  players are free to attack each other and raid any structure built in those zones.

Players who are experienced with PvP and deal with in-game loss easily may be able to acquire higher end loot quickly as the high-end monuments, are generally located in NML.

The green zone marked “Frontier” are locations new players are encouraged to setup their starter bases.  The other colors represent “Land Claims” made by clans of players who work together for a common set of goals but are not PvP/KoS zones unless otherwise marked on the map.  More information regarding clan land claims can be found here

There at times may also be other green zones marked Bandit Town and NPC Town which are associated with the Standard Outpost and Bandit-Camp areas coded in by Facepunch.  Players are permitted to build in NPC areas but do not receive benefits such as Teleporters and other “city” conveniences. Also please remember the Facepunch standard “Aggression” mechanics still apply in these zones and NPCs will attack players under certain circumstances.

At times, the Bandit Camp or Outpost zones are placed in No-Mans land portions of the map, so when that occurs No-Man’s Land rules apply.

Setting up an initial base of operations.

Most players starting out should consider setting up a starter base in a Frontier Zone on the map (use /map) to serve as an initial base of operations as soon as possible.  These places on the map are marked in Green.

Building a starter base enables players to unload loot safely, at regular intervals, thereby reducing the risk of a unfortunate encounter with a bear, wolf or scientist ruining a hour of farming.

A simple wood 2×2 shelter with a roof, with key locks on the door and tool cupboard can be done with about 3000-4000 wood which is easily farmed under 20 minutes.  This small shelter can hold a couple wood boxes – enough to store materials to build something larger in a town/city, form a clan or perhaps contribute materials to another clan a new player joins.

Important Tip #1: Do NOT leave a twig base behind

All players MUST upgrade their initial shelter to wood as twig structures are permitted to be destroyed as per the rules.   “Stealing” (without breaking anything) is also permitted by the rules, except from other clan members.  Placing a lock on anything that can be locked (toolchests, boxes, fridges) is strongly encouraged and avoiding use of windows, except reinforced glass windows, are very good ways to avoid theft and loss of property.

Important Tip #2: Avoid Unclaimed/NML/Claimed Land at the start

Be sure to avoid setting up starter bases in unclaimed land, clan claims, or No Man’s Land (PVP) zones.  Any structure built in claimed clan zones (without permission from the clan), No Man’s Land or Unclaimed land (without pending claims) are subject to raid at any time, without warning and is permitted by the rules.

Advancing in game

Once a new player has established their starter base, advancing progression is a natural next step. This could involve farming more basic materials, setting up a sleeping bag and maybe building a small furnace to refine metal ore.  With a minimized threat of “Kill on Sight” or “Random Death Match” behaviour from other players outside No Man’s Land, farming is easier and generally more rewarding.

Farming trash barrels and tool crates will give players some metal tools and scrap to begin progression to obtaining and researching better weapons, tools and armor.

Making Friends/Meeting new people

This community enables the opportunity to meet other players and make friends in a less murdery way.  Once players reaches a level of comfort and self-sufficiency players will likely encounter a few other people in-game.  Giving a friendly “Hi” while encountering players in frontier, on the road or perhaps stopping at a gathering for a short conversation will help build connections with other players, possibly leading to a invite to a clan or city.

Asking around for information about cities, good loot or clans is a great conversation starter and could help forge a new “friendship”

You may also make friends out of game in the Rust Empires discord server by joining in the conversation and making plans out of game via the PC or Mobile app.

That being said, playing solo is also an option.  Players are by no means “required” to join clans or even socialize if they choose.  However most times, the game is fun, easier and more enjoyable when played with others.

Then What?

After a couple hours players should have enough resources to build a larger/better base to achieve their initial goals.  Players are encouraged to upgrade to stone and metal walls/doors to resist theft/destruction in the event of a player not playing by the rules and better defend themselves with stronger/better armor/weapons found in vending machines, monuments, or perhaps through the spoils of consensual PVP.

After that, well… is up to you!  HAVE FUN and GOOD LUCK!

Key Messages/Tips:

i.e.:  TL;DR

  1. Read the rules! It’s important!
  2. Start small – a 2×2 upgraded wood base only requires approximately 2-4k wood.  Do NOT leave a base with any twig (even a roof or foundation) showing to the outside at any time or face destruction.
  3. Lock EVERYTHING.  Key locks are just fine.  Stealing is permitted in certain circumstances, so if you leave something unlocked and something is stolen without breaking anything – sucks to be you.
  4. Consider being social – Clans/Cities or even the Frontier really allow for the opportunity for a great experience and in some cases, faster progression.  Not everyone gets along, so it’s ok to change locations/clans if a players chooses. In time, players are bound to find other players with mutual interest.
